Dear Parent/Guardian,

Smithson Public School students will be going ice skating as part of the school’s Health and Physical Education program.

In order to make your child’s ice skating experience safe and more enjoyable, it is important that your child:

  • wear properly-fitted ice skates
  • wear gloves or mitts at all times when on the ice
  • dress appropriately for the arena/weather conditions

Important: In previous years, it was recommended that students wear appropriate helmets when participating in skating activities.

Please note that effective immediately, the Waterloo Region District School Board requires that all staff and students (JK-12) wear CSA approved head protection designed for skating during all skating activities.

CSA approved helmets bearing the CSA certification or identification are required. Bicycle helmets are not permitted for skating activities as they are not designed and tested for this purpose.

The Waterloo Region District School Board continues to place safety as a high priority for all of our staff and students. We believe that adopting this mandatory helmet policy will help protect students and staff during skating activities.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the school’s skating program, or if you do not wish to have your child participate in the ice skating program, please contact the school at 519-578-3890.
