It is with great pleasure that I join the Smithson PS community as your new Principal. My first two weeks have been incredible, and in only a few short days I have had the opportunity to meet so many of our students, who have welcomed me warmly and with a ready smile.  I have asked them to introduce themselves to me so that I can begin to learn their names, and they are doing so eagerly and often, and always with a smile. Staff have been equally welcoming and have made me feel right at home, and for that I am tremendously thankful.

I come to Smithson PS having been the Vice-Principal at MacGregor PS, and before that as Vice Principal at both Empire PS & MacGregor PS.  I also have an extensive background as a Special Education Resource Teacher (SERT) at both Edna Staebler PS and Laurentian PS, as well as at a local private school.

I look forward to meeting members of our parent community at upcoming events, including our “Welcome to Kindergarten” night this evening, the Kodaly concert next week, as well as our Arts Night in May and the Spring Fling in June.  I firmly believe that a strong connection between home and school, and between the school and its wider community, is absolutely necessary so that all members of the school community feel engaged, valued and have a voice in the education of our children.

The celebration of the diversity of our students, embedded within the concepts of equity and inclusion for all, is one of my core beliefs.  My first priority is to create a welcoming, safe and inclusive learning environment for all students, where students (and staff) feel comfortable to take risks with their own learning.  My door is always open for students, staff and parents, and I will always encourage collaborative and constructive conversations that have student and community engagement and learning as their goal.

Again, I look forward to getting to know the Smithson school community much better over the coming months, and am grateful for this opportunity to work with all of you and your children.

Sincerely,
Karen Moore
