Fifth’s Disease

Dear Smithson Families:

The letter is to inform you about two confirmed Fifth’s Disease infections at Smithson School.  There is no reason to be alarmed as this is a common viral disease similar to a cold.

Fifth Disease begins with a fever, headache and mild cold-like symptoms (a stuffy or runny nose). A few days later, a red marks (rosy cheeks) will appear on the child’s face.  Several days later, the rash may spread and red blotches extend down to the trunk, arms, and legs.

Children with Fifth Disease can attend school unless they feel poorly.  There is no need to be concerned.

However, Fifth Disease can be potentially harmful to an unborn fetus.  If someone in your household is pregnant, and your child shows symptoms of Fifth Disease, she should see her doctor immediately.

If you have any questions, please contact us.

Yours truly,

Carolyn Graham, Principal
