Dear Smithson Families, I hope that this finds all of you well.

Just wanting to give you a couple of updates:

We have been given our class structure for next year and it is the following:

3      Kindergarten classes

Grade 1

Grade 1/2

Grade 2/3

Grade 3

Grade 4

Grade 4/5

Grade 6

Primary Hearing Services, Junior Hearing Services, DC, Primary ASD, Junior ASD

As you can see from our numbers, our enrollment is up and we have increased by an additional Kindergarten class and another Primary class. Class lists will be posted on the Friday prior to the Labour Day week end. As always, we do not take requests for specific teachers unless there is a dire reason e.g. your child should not be placed with another student. If you have a question regarding this, please contact me. Class teachers spend much time placing students where they deem to be the best fit for their success.

As you may notice, we are getting ready to receive a shed for our outdoor Kindergarten toys. This shed is located in close proximity to the enclosed play area for safety and ease of getting the toys in and out for our little learners.

On Wednesday of next week we will be having Junior Track and Field Day at Smithson and on Thursday we will be having Jump Rope for Heart and our Annual Fitness Day with Zumba, Judo, and Soccer. Volunteers are always welcome. Please contact the office if you are available.

Thank you to all families that supported our recent Chocolate Bar Fundraiser. It was a huge success and all funds generated go back to supporting our great school to assist our students in their achievement. Thus far we are purchasing more ipads, document cameras, chrome books, Leveled Reading Books, a Voice recording of our choir, and a  Kindie reptile show.  More to come…. Again, thank you!!!

We have been notified that we will once again be running extended day programming for our JK-Grade 2 students for the 2014/15 school year. The program is available from 7 a.m. -8:55 a.m. and again from 3:15 p.m. – 6 p.m. Rates are competitive and the program is staffed by a qualified ECE right in the school. Please contact the office if you would like further information on registering.

A reminder that May 30 is a PD Day for all Teaching Staff. They will be working on student assessment. The school will be closed on the day.

EQAO will be occurring for our Grades 3 & 6 students from June 3-5. More information will come home to families of those students in the next couple of weeks.

The Board has requested that parents please take a minute in participate in the communication survey. Please see the message and link below:

The Waterloo Region District School Board is going online!

WRDSB Communication Survey for Parents/Guardians

In order to help us better understand our parent/guardian preferences for receiving information, an on-line survey has been created to gather input on ways to improve communication, streamline processes and reduce the use of paper within school communities. This initiative is in alignment with the continued work of engagement and communication within the Waterloo Region District School Board.

This survey can be accessed through a link called “Communication Survey for Parents” found on the Waterloo Region District School Board website at: http://wrdsb.on.ca

The survey will open on May 15th and will close on June 5th.

All parents/guardians of Waterloo Region District School Board students are requested to complete this short survey at their earliest convenience. Responses to the surveys are anonymous and confidential.

Thank you for helping us understand your preferences for receiving information.

Smithson School is a beehive of activity with engaged learning going on every day. If you can believe it we only have 24 more days of this school year left.  Where has the time gone?

Best wishes for a lovely spring and as always, please feel free to contact me should you have any questions or comments.

Sincerely,

Carolyn Graham

Proud Principal, Smithson Public School
