  1.  Fall Fundraiser – Fresh From the Farm

School Council is excited to offer a healthy option as their their first fundraiser of the 2018-2019 school year – Fresh from the Farm!   Order forms have been sent home with students, and are due back no later than October 12th.

  • The students will be selling Ontario-grown fruit and vegetables to our local school community – supporting our local economy and Ontario farmers.
  • Fresh from the Farm is a collaborative initiative: Ministry of Education, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Dietitians of Canada, Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers’ Association.
  • 40% of all sales go directly to the school.

There are 2 produce bundles for sale:

  • ‘A’ sells for $14 – 5 lbs white potatoes, 3 lbs carrots, 3 lbs yellow onions, 3 lbs sweet potatoes;
  • ‘B’ sells for $15 – 8 lb box of 20-25 fancy grade Empire apples.

Delivery of this perishable food order will take place November through mid-December. We will notify you on the delivery date once known.

We look forward to your participation in this fantastic fundraising opportunity.

  1.  School Day

All parents need to ensure that they are signed up to receive notifications and announcements from Smithson PS via School Day.  Weekly updates, WRDSB notices, payment for pizza and planners, field trip permission forms and payment will all be done through School Day this year.  If you do not have a School Day account yet, please let your child’s teacher know and we will send home the form necessary to enroll. If you are having difficulty signing up on School Day, please come in to the school and we will be happy to assist you.

  1.  Drop Off / Pick Up of Students

Please do not use the driveway off of Belleview Ave. if you need to come in to the school.  Please enter the parking lot from the entrance off Smithson St. and park at the side of the school.  Our front driveway is ONLY for our the drop off and pick up of our bus students.

If you will be picking up your child early from school or at the end of the day and they are enrolled in either Extended Day or YWCA program, please inform the staff of these programs so that they are not worried if your child is absent.

If you drop off or pick up your child from school, please do so outside on the tarmac/playground.  Our front foyer and main office are very busy, especially at the beginning and end of the day, and added traffic in the halls can cause extra noise and anxiety for our students.

  1.  Student Safety Reminders

As a reminder to all of our students, here are a few safety rules that we all need to be aware of:

  • If you ride a bike to school, you must get off your bike once you are on school property and WALK your bike to the bike racks. The same rule applies to those students who use a scooter or skateboard to get to school, or wear rollerblades.  You must not use these once you are on school property for safety reasons.
  • The staff parking lot is OFF LIMITS to students before, during and after school.  There must be absolutely NO PLAYING in this area as it is a tremendous safety risk.
  • We ask that students keep personal toys (including Pokemon cards) at home, rather than bringing them to school.  They are often a distraction during the school day and at Nutrition Break amongst students.

  1.  Pizza

Pizza lunch will again be happening on Wednesdays this year.  Stay tuned for more information on purchasing options via School Day.  We are hoping to have this up and running for mid-October.

  1.  School Council and other volunteer opportunities

The Smithson community has always prided itself on supporting the school in many different ways.  If you are looking for ways to be involved with your child’s school, we encourage you to consider one (or more!) of the following volunteer opportunities for the 2018-2019 school year:

  • Nutrition for Learning
  • Strong Start reading program
  • Home Reading program
  • School Council

As always, you are welcome to connect with your child’s teacher for volunteer opportunities within the classroom.  For more information about any of the above opportunities or to put your name forward as a volunteer, please email Mrs. Moore at karen_moore@wrdsb.ca

  1.  School Council – Next Meeting
