  1.  Meet the Teacher Open House

Please join us on Wednesday, Sept. 12th for our Meet the Teacher Open House.  We will be open from 6:00 – 7:00 so that you can pop in and put a face to a name, introduce yourself and see your child’s classroom.  We are looking forward to meeting you and beginning a new year of partnership with our parent community.

  1.  School Year Information

Follow the link below to find all the pertinent information about the start up of the 2018-2019 school year, including which forms need to be completed, calendars and important dates, etc.

  1.  School Day

All parents need to ensure that they are signed up to receive notifications and announcements from Smithson PS via School Day.  Weekly updates, WRDSB notices, payment for pizza and planners, field trip permission forms and payment will all be done through School Day this year.  If you do not have a School Day account yet, please let your child’s teacher know and we will send home the form necessary to enroll. If you are having difficulty signing up on School Day, please come in to the school and we will be happy to assist you.

  1.  Drop Off / Pick Up of Students

Please do not use the driveway off of Belleview Ave. if you need to come in to the school.  Please enter the parking lot from the entrance off Smithson St. and park at the side of the school.  Our front driveway is ONLY for our the drop off and pick up of our bus students.

If you will be picking up your child early from school or at the end of the day and they are enrolled in either Extended Day or YWCA program, please inform the staff of these programs so that they are not worried if your child is absent.

If you drop off or pick up your child from school, please do so outside on the tarmac/playground.  Our front foyer and main office are very busy, especially at the beginning and end of the day, and added traffic in the halls can cause extra noise and anxiety for our students.

  1.  Planners

Planners for this year need to be purchased through School Day.  Please log in to your School Day account and go to the “Products” tab.  Cost is $7. Teachers will give your child a planner to take home once it has been paid for through School Day.

Please note:  Kindergarten students DO NOT require a planner.

  1.  Pizza

Pizza lunch will again be happening on Wednesdays this year.  Stay tuned for more information on purchasing options via School Day.  We are hoping to have this up and running for late Sept. / early Oct.

  1.  School Council and other volunteer opportunities

The Smithson community has always prided itself on supporting the school in many different ways.  If you are looking for ways to be involved with your child’s school, we encourage you to consider one (or more!) of the following volunteer opportunities for the 2018-2019 school year:

  • Nutrition for Learning
  • Strong Start reading program
  • Home Reading program
  • School Council

As always, you are welcome to connect with your child’s teacher for volunteer opportunities within the classroom.  For more information about any of the above opportunities or to put your name forward as a volunteer, please email Mrs. Moore at karen_moore@wrdsb.ca

  1.  School Council – First Meeting

Our first School Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 18th at 6:00 in the library.  All are welcome. Please join us to find out what School Council at Smithson PS involves, how you can contribute, or just to find out what is happening at your child’s school.

  1.  PD Day – Fri., Sept. 21st

Please note that our first PD Day is Fri., Sept. 21st, and all Extended Day programs will be closed for the day to allow all staff, including ECE’s and EA’s to participate in mandatory Health & Safety training and site-based professional development.
