June 7, 2016

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I am writing with important information about changes to our Breakfast Program for the fall of 2016. Nutrition for Learning, the organization that supports our program with funding through the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, has reviewed their process and support model in recognition of the increasing need in our region for access to healthy, nutritious food.

As a result of this review, Nutrition for Learning is changing their delivery model and moving to a classroom snack bin program. At Smithson, the bin program will begin in the fall of 2016 which means that beginning in September 2016, we will no longer be in a position to offer our Breakfast Club program. Instead, each classroom will receive a bin of healthy snacks on a daily basis.

Nutrition for Learning, through the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, will continue to provide up to 15% of the cost of the food to support the program. As always, we will need to look for additional financial support to make up the remaining costs. If you are able to make a financial contribution to our program, please visit the board’s website and click on the “Donate Online” tab. Please be sure to select our school name from the list and then indicate in the message section that your donation is in support of Smithson’s Nutrition for Learning program. Thank you in advance for your support!

I wanted to make you aware of this change as early as possible as I know our Breakfast Club is a program that many of our families take advantage of each morning. More information about the specifics of the bin program will be shared in the fall. We will be looking for volunteers to help support our program so if you are interested and available, please contact us at the school. We anticipate being able to start the bin program in late September.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Michelle Schmid
